1, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Montclair State University scored a pair of goals off penalty corners in the first half to take control of the game en route to a 3-0 field hockey win over host Washington College in the season opener for both teams today on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The game was part of Washington College's Jammin Jesse's Opening Weekend. Washington prevented Montclair from getting on the board early in the game when freshman goalie Elena Nicholoff (Tunkahannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) stopped a penalty stroke less than two minutes into the contest. The Red Hawks dented the scoreboard, however, with 15:28 remaining in the first half when Jen Soss scored off a penalty corner off an assist from Jennifer Tanis. Montclair went up, 2-0, with 6:51 to play in the period on another penalty corner as Kristen Swartz scored off an assists from Soss. The only goal of the second half came when Tanis knocked in a rebound off her own shot with 11:33 left in the contest. Jackie Supko made nine saves in the shutout for the Red Hawks. Nicholoff came in for the early stroke and played the second half for Washington, making five saves and allowing one goal. Junior goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made four saves and allowed two goals in the first half for WC. Montclair State held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in penalty corners in the game. The Shorewomen return to action Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against William Paterson in the final event of Jammin Jesse's Opening Weekend.
