Blue Jays Rally Past WC, 3-2
Spadanuta, Gavin Score for Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sarah Bender scored her second and third goals of the game on back-to-back possessions late in the second half to rally visiting Johns Hopkins past host Washington College, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Blue Jays improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 2-11 and 2-6 with the loss.

The Shorewomen quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead when sophomore attack Amy Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) scored with 33:34 to play in the opening half. Washington extended the lead to 2-0 with 26:26 left in the first half as senior attack Molly Gavin (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored off an assist from senior midfielder Ally Simons (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley). Johns Hopkins cut the lead to one goal when Bender scored off a feed from Leah Horton with 10:48 to go in the half.

Bender tied the score at 2-2 when she scored off an assist from Adair Landry with 7:59 left in the game. Bender then scored what would prove to be the game-winner just 23 seconds later off an assist from Emily Miller.

Dayna Eng made eight saves for the Blue Jays, while freshman goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made nine stops for Washington.

Johns Hopkins held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 12-6 edge in penalty corners in the game.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson.
