September 3, 2005 UPPER MONTCLAIR, NJ -- Host Montclair State posted a 4-1 victory over visiting Washington College in the field hockey season opener for both schools this evening in Upper Montclair, NJ. Sophomore attack Rachel Miller (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored the Shorewomen's only goal of the game. Kristen Swartz put the Red Hawks on the board when she knocked in a goal from the side of the cage with 7:44 left in the first half. Alexandria Kelly assisted on Swartz's goal. Montclair took its 1-0 lead into halftime. Kelly made it 2-0 with 23:54 left in the second half when she redirected a shot by Brisa Casis into the goal. Swartz then extended the lead to 3-0 when she redirected a shot by Jess Rosewall for hr second goal of the night with 12:20 on the clock. Karli Troisi scored Montclair's fourth goal off another Rosewall assist with 7:37 to play. Miller broke up the shutout when she scored off the first collegiate assist from sophomore attack Amanda Garbart (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) with 48 seconds on the clock. Robyn Apicelli made five saves in the win for the Red Hawks, while sophomore goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made nine stops for the Shorewomen. Sophomore defender Lindsey Riley (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) recorded a defensive save for Washington. Montclair held a 20-7 advantage in shots and a 14-0 advantage in penalty corners in the game. The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. game at William Paterson.
