Shorewomen Catch Marlins, 3-1
Scimeca Scores Two Goals

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior attack Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored two goals and sophomore attack Shane Moser (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) recorded two assists as the host Washington College field hockey team picked up its first victory of the season this afternoon, downing Virginia Wesleyan by a 3-1 final. The Shorewomen improved to 1-2 with the win, while the Marlins slipped to 2-2.

Scimeca scored both of her goals in the first half. Her first, an unassisted goal, was a hard shot on a breakaway that went off the stick of Virginia Wesleyan goalie Margie Baker and into the right-hand corner of the cage with 21:10 to play in the first half. Her second goal, which was assisted by Moser, came from a low angle with 5:00 left in the period.

The Marlins got on the board with 14:26 to play in the second as Chrissy Clancy scored off an assist from Cara Byrd. Washington freshman attack/midfielder Rachel Miller (Greene, NY/Greene Central) pushed the lead back to two with 10:58 to play with a goal off Moser's second assist.

Washington freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made eight saves, while sophomore defender Lindsey Riley (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) picked up her second defensive save of the season.

The Shorewomen open Centennial Conference play Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Bryn Mawr.
