September 9, 2004 ST. MARY'S CITY, MD -- Senior attack Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) became Washington College's all-time leader in career goals this afternoon, but the Shorewomen fell to host St. Mary's (MD) College, 2-1, in field hockey action in St. Mary's City, MD. Washington slipped to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while the Seahawks picked up their first win of the year and improved to 1-2. St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead with 30:59 remaining in the first half when Kaitlin Anderson scored off an assist from Amy Skrickus. The Seahawks maintained that lead until 19:41 remained in the second half, when Scimeca scored the school-record 46th goal of her career on a penalty stroke to tie the score. Abby Johnson scored on a penalty stroke for St. Mary's with 5:33 left in the game to give the Seahawks the win. Scimeca's 46 career goals are one more than the previous record of 45 set by Christyl Arrabal from 1996-99. Seahawk goalkeeper Whitney Fahrman and Washington freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) each made eight saves in the game. Sophomore defender Lindsey Riley (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) and junior defender Meggie Kratz (Owings, MD/Northern) each made a defensive save for the Shorewomen, while Courtney Alafriz tallied one for St. Mary's. Riley's was the first of her collegiate career. Washington held a 19-16 advantage in shots and a 13-9 edge in penalty corners. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against Virginia Wesleyan.
