September 4, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Montclair State jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead and held on for a 3-2 win over host Washington College in field hockey action this afternoon in Chestertown, MD. Jennifer Tanis scored two goals in the win for the Red Hawks (2-0), while senior attack Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) tied Washington's school record for goals in a career in the loss for the Shorewomen (0-1). Scimeca gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead with her record-tying goal with 26:57 remaining in the first half. The goal was the 45th of her career, equaling the mark set by Christyl Arrabal from 1996-99. Freshman attack/midfielder Rachel Miller (Greene, NY/Greene Central) picked up her first collegiate assist on Scimeca's goal. The Red Hawks tied the score with 21:52 left in the first as Tanis knocked in an unassisted goal and took the lead with 15:39 remaining in the period as Tanis scored again, this time off an assist from Erin Balint. Montclair pushed the lead to 3-1 with 11:26 remaining in the first with an unassisted goal by Jen Soss. Washington mounted a comeback in the second half, outshooting the Red Hawks, 14-7, in the period. Miller knocked in her first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore defender/midfielder Kristin Ward (Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) with 8:58 remaining, but Montclair State held on for the win. Montclair State goalie Robyn Apicelli made 12 saves en route to the win, including a save on a penalty stroke in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made 16 stops in her first collegiate game. Ward made a pair of defensive saves for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen are back in action Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. game at St. Mary's (MD).
