October 2, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College defeated host Washington College, 2-1, in Centennial Conference field hockey action this afternoon in Chestertown, MD. The Diplomats, who held a 1-0 lead at halftime, improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 4-5 and 2-2 with the loss. F&M's Maggie Onasch scored the only goal of the first half with 26:16 left in the period. The Diplomats went up 2-0 on a penalty stroke by Brittney Croll with 30:37 remaining in the second half. Senior attack Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) got Washington on the board with 5:15 to play in the game when she scored her eighth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore attack/midfielder Ally Simons (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley). Michelle Altman made seven saves in goal for F&M, while freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) tallied 12 for Washington. Sophomore defenders Lindsey Riley (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) and Katie Madron (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) each recorded a defensive save for the Shorewomen, while Erin Benjamin made a defensive save for the Diplomats. Washington held a 19-16 advantage in shots and a 15-13 edge in penalty corners. The Shorewomen will travel to Haverford Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game.
