13, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attack Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored two goals to lead the Washington College field hockey team past visiting St. Mary's (MD) College, 3-2, this afternoon in Chestertown. The Shorewomen improved to 2-2 on the season with the win, while the Seahawks slipped to 3-3. Neither team scored in the first half until Scimeca knocked in a goal with 1:36 to go before the break to give WC a 1-0 halftime lead. Freshman midfielder Molly Gavin (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) picked up her first collegiate assist on the goal. St. Mary's tied things up with 25:52 to go in the second half when Abby Johnson scored off an assist from Leigh Langmead. The score remained tied until Scimeca scored with 10:30 to play, putting the Shorewomen up, 2-1. Freshman midfielder Ally Simons (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland) scored her first collegiate goal less than two minutes later, with 8:45 remaining, to push the lead to 3-1. The Seahawks got back within one goal when Kaitlin Anderson scored with 3:37 remaining, but the Shorewomen held on for the win. WC senior Zina Hense (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) and Seahawk goalie Whitney Fahrman each made seven saves in the game. The Shorewomen held a 14-13 edge in shots, but the Seahawks held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
