30, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- A second-half comeback by Washington College fell just short this afternoon as the Shorewomen fell to visiting Mary Washington, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action. The game was the season opener for both teams. Mary Washington jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead. Emily Falvey scored of an assist from Meghan McMahon with 27:22 left in the period, Brynn Maguire scored off an assist from Chrissy Soper with 19:10 to go, and Emily Nagel scored an unassisted goal with 5:15 left before the break. In the second half, Mary Washington goalie Robyn Lankford kept the 3-0 lead intact with 25:52 remaining when she saved a penalty stroke by Washington freshman defender Katie Madron (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun). Madron would get another crack at Lankford, however, converting another penalty stroke and scoring her first collegiate goal to get the Shorewomen on the board with 18:07 left in the game. The Shorewomen cut the lead to one when senior attack Taneil Sisco (Kent County, MD/Kent County) scored an unassisted goal with 5:14 remaining. Sisco controlled the ball on a breakaway, raced to the Mary Washington cage and beat Lankford by redirecting the ball off her own stick. The Shorewomen had opportunities to score in the final minutes, but the Eagles held on for the win. Lankford made 12 saves for Mary Washington, while senior Zina Hense (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) made 16 saves for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Notre Dame (MD). Box Score
