9, 2002 WESTMINSTER, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen lost to Johns Hopkins, 3-2, this afternoon in a Centennial Conference Semifinal game at McDaniel College. The Shorewomen (10-8) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Blue Jays (12-8) rallied to score three second-half goals and advance to tomorrow's championship game against the host Green Terror. The Shorewomen broke a scoreless tie with 2:04 left in the first half when sophomore forward Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored her 18th goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Julie Phillips (Easton, MD/Easton). Hopkins tied things up with 28:00 to go in the second when Ashlee Duncan scored an unassisted goal and took a 2-1 lead with 16:17 to play on an unassisted goal by Kelly Hewitt. Shorewoman senior Jessica McAdams (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) tied the game with 9:38 on the clock with a goal of her own. JHU's Jenny Farrelly scored the game-winner for the Blue Jays on a penalty stroke with 6:39 left in regulation. Hopkins goalie Missi Schafhauser made ten saves in the game, while WC junior Zina Hense (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) made seven. WC held a 15-12 advantage in shots, but the Blue Jays had a 10-9 edge in penalty corners. Washington senior back Alexis Stapanon (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) made the game's only defensive save. Johns Hopkins will play McDaniel, a 1-0 winner over Franklin & Marshall in the other semifinal, in tomorrow's championship game at 12:00 p.m. The Shorewomen will now await word of a possible bid to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic playoffs.
