22, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore forward Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored three goals and tied the school record for goals in a season to power the host Washington College Shorewomen past No. 18 Johns Hopkins, 5-2, in Centennial Conference field hockey action this afternoon in Chestertown. WC co-head coach Sarah Feyerherm picked up her 100th career coaching win in the victory. The Shorewomen (6-6, 3-1 Centennial Conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead by halftime. Scimeca scored the game's first goal off an assist from senior midfielder Julie Phillips (Easton, MD/Easton) with 29:29 left in the first half. With 22:16 on the clock, junior forward Taneil Sisco (Kent County, MD/Kent County) knocked in a goal off a feed from her high school teammate, junior back Missy Tine (Chestertown, MD/Kent County). The scoring continued with 16:53 left in the period when Sisco knocked in a loose ball for her second goal of the contest. Scimeca pushed the lead to 4-0 with an impressive goal with 9:50 to go before the break. Scimeca attacked the cage from the left side, only to have Hopkins goalie Missi Schafhauser deflect the ball off her stick. Scimeca managed to recover the ball, however, and flick a shot into the right-hand corner of the cage from a nearly-impossible angle. Hopkins (9-5, 4-1 Centennial Conference) mounted a rally early in the second half as Catie Koppel scored off an assist from Anna Rehwinkel with 27:55 to play and Ashlee Duncan scored an unassisted goal with 2:50 on the clock to cut the lead to 4-2. The Shorewomen managed to control possession throughout much of the remainder of the period thanks, in part, to strong play in the back from senior defender Megan Daily (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern). Scimeca knocked in her third goal of the day off a pass from the right side from junior forward Erin Thomas (Newport News, VA/Denbigh) to all but put the game away with 9:26 remaining. Scimeca's three goals boosted her total this season to 14, equaling the school record set by Nicole Maccari in 1999. Scimeca's 34 points this season are one shy of the school record set by Christyl Arrabal in 1997 and matched by Arrabal in 1999. Feyerherm's 100th win comes in her final season as head coach. The ten-year coach who accepted a position in the WC Student Affairs Office last spring, is serving as co-head coach this season alongside Rachel Boyle, who will take over as head coach. Feyerherm's career coaching record at WC now stands at 100-68-2. Washington junior goalkeeper Zina Hense (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) made six saves in the win, while Schafhauser had 15 for Hopkins. Hopkins held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners, but the Shorewomen outshot the Blue Jays, 20-9. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
