24, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- With its top seed in this weekend's Centennial Conference playoffs already solidified, the Washington College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 conference game to Western Maryland today in Chestertown. The game marked the end of the regular season for both teams. The Shorewomen fell to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while the Green Terror improved to 13-4 and 6-3. The game was scoreless for the entire first half, though the Shorewomen held 9-0 and 5-0 advantages in shots and penalty corners, respectively, over the opening stanza. Western Maryland sophomore defenders Jen Fegley (Milton, PA/Milton) and Kim Camponelli (New Castle, PA/William Penn) helped keep the Shorewomen off the board as each recorded a defensive save in the first half. The Green Terror got on the board less than four minutes into the second half, at 31:32, when junior forward Tracy Kessler (Cockeysville, MD/Hereford) scored off an assist by sophomore forward Tara Morris (Mountaintop, PA/Pleasant Valley). Western Maryland added a goal with 9:17 on the clock when sophomore midfielder Kristin Barrick (North East, MD/Rising Sun) knocked in a goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Sara Thomas (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford). Washington sophomore defender Missy Tine (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) picked up a defensive save in the second half. The Shorewomen will host the Centennial Conference playoffs Saturday and Sunday. Washington faces Gettysburg (6-3 Centennial) in one semifinal, while Franklin & Marshall (7-2 Centennial) will take on Johns Hopkins (6-3 Centennial). Despite being the only Centennial Conference school ranked in the NFHCA Division III poll, Western Maryland (No. 20) is left out of the conference playoffs due to their losses to both Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins.
