2, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College head coach Sarah Feyerherm knows when to call a timeout. With her Shorewoman field hockey team tied with Swarthmore, 2-2, with 8:47 remaining and an unblemished Centennial Conference record on the line, Feyerherm decided it was time to talk things over. Seventeen seconds later, junior midfielder Julie Phillips (Easton, MD/Easton) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Shorewomen's 3-2 home win over the Garnet Tide this afternoon. Swarthmore (4-5 overall, 1-3 Centennial Conference) scored less than two minutes into the game when senior forward Kim Cariello (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) found junior forward Meg Woodworth (Lexington, MD/Middlesex) for the game's first goal. The 1-0 lead stood for 24 minutes before Phillips knocked in a rebound to tie the score at 1-1. Senior forward Avery Coleman (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) had nearly scored seconds early, but Swarthmore junior defender Katie Cloonan (Fairport, NY/Fairport) knocked the ball away. Phillips scored on the ensuing loose ball. The Shorewomen (8-3, 6-0) took their first lead with 27:59 left in the second half when sophomore forward Taneil Sisco (Kent County, MD/Kent County) scored off a Coleman assist. Swarthmore evened the score with 10:54 on the clock when senior forward Alison Gaffney (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) knocked in an unassisted goal. The game-winner from Phillips, a bouncing shot, came with 8:30 on the clock. Washington avenged a pair of 2-0 losses to the Garnet Tide last season with the win. Swarthmore beat the Shorewomen in the regular season and in the Centennial Conference semifinals in 2000. The Shorewomen held a 26-13 edge in shots on goal and an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Washington, off to its best Centennial start ever, takes a break from conference play Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Eastern Shore rival Salisbury. The Sea Gulls are the nation's top-ranked Division III team. Box Score
