31, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College field hockey team recorded its first postseason win in program history this afternoon by defeating visiting Ithaca, 2-1, in the first round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championships. The Shorewomen (13-7) built a 2-0 halftime lead and staved off second-half surge by the Bombers (12-9) to earn the right to face top-seeded Catholic in a semifinal on Saturday. The Shorewomen got on the board first, at 29:18, when junior midfielder Julie Phillips (Easton, MD/Easton) lifted a shot high and into the back of the Bomber cage after receiving a pass from sophomore defender Missy Tine (Chestertown, MD/Kent County). Washington added another goal, just over ten minutes later, when freshman midfielder/forward Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Erin Thomas (Newport News, VA/Denbigh). Ithaca, who recorded just two penalty corners in the first half, turned things around in the second period by tallying 12 penalty corners. The Bombers cut the lead to one on an unassisted goal by freshman forward/midfielder Brooke Aldrich (Oxford, NY/Oxford) with 14:21 to play. Aldrich's goal came just 19 seconds after a shot by senior forward/midfielder Michelle Janda (Sterling, MA/Nashota Regional) hit the Washington post. Both goalkeepers played well in the game. Washington junior Christie Allebach (Telford, PA/Souderton) and Ithaca sophomore Sara Whiting (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) each recorded 13 saves in the contest. Catholic is the host school for this weekend's semifinals and championship game. The Cardinals (15-3) will play the Shorewomen at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. The championship game will be played at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Box Score
