15, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD Wesley's Colleen Thomas scored a game-high 17 points to lead Delmarva rival Wesley to a 56-47 victory over host Washington College on Saturday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in non-conference women's basketball action. The Wolverines improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Shorewomen drop to 4-3. Washington jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first 7:29, capped off by a three-point basket by junior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X). Wesley would answer by scoring the next 10 points to grab a 19-17 lead with 7:56 remaining in the opening half. The Shorewomen scored eight of the final 11 points in the first half to take a 25-22 lead into halftime. The Wolverines used a 14-4 bulge in the first 7:04 of the second half to grab a 36-29 lead. Wesley took the lead on a fast-break layup by Angela Owens at 31-29 and would never relinquish the lead. The Shorewomen cut it twice to one point, at 38-37 with 9:25 left and 48-47 with 1:36 left. With the score 48-47, Thomas scored on a fast-break layup and was fouled. She netted the free throw to make it 51-47 with 1:31 remaining. The Wolverines scored the final five points of the game to provide the final margin. Owens scored 11 points, added a team-high nine rebounds, and along with Herbie Rayne, blocked a team-best three shots for Wesley. Particia Millner swiped a game-best four steals in the win. O'Donnell finished with a team-high 16 points on the afternoon for the Shorewomen. Sophomore forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) tallied a game-high 10 rebounds and had a team-best three steals. Senior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) led the Shorewomen with seven assists and three blocks. Sophomore guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) tied her career-high in rebounds with eight and assists with six. Washington held a commanding 55-41 advantage on the boards. Wesley shot 35% in the game, compared to 25% for the Shorewomen. The Wolverines outscored the Shorewomen in the paint 28-12 and 14-0 on fast-break points. The Shorewomen return to action on Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. against Bates at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout in Nassau, Bahamas. |
