17, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD Katy Powell recorded a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 10 assists as 21st ranked McDaniel College downed host Washington College, 83-69, in Centennial Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center. The Green Terror improved to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen conclude their season with a 12-13 overall record and 6-12 in the conference. The 12 victories are the most for the Shorewomen since 2000-01 when they went 12-12. The Green Terror trailed 7-6 with 16:34 to go in the first half before using a 15-3 run to gain control of the contest. The run was capped by two free throws by Heather Thompson with 9:55 remaining in the opening half to make it 21-10 McDaniel. The Green Terror expanded the lead to as many as 17 points in the first half on two occasions and took a 40-27 lead into intermission. McDaniel, who led by as many as 22 points in the second half, were up 63-42 with 9:42 to go in the game before the Shorewomen used a 14-0 run to get the game within 63-56 with 7:16 left. Freshman guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) spearheaded the run by scoring eight points during the spurt. However, that was as close as Washington College would come in the second half. The Green Terror reasserted control of the contest with two jumpers by Allison Biggs to take a 68-56 lead with 5:49 remaining. McDaniel shot 48% from the field compared to 41% for Washington. The Green Terror also had the edge on the boards by a margin of 43-32. Four McDaniel players contributed double-figure point totals. Biggs tied Powell for game-best in points with 16. Thompson chipped in with 13 points and recorded a team-high eight rebounds, while Sally Grace came off the bench to net 12 points. Junior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) led the Shorewomen with a team-best 15 points. Sophomore guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) scored 14 points, while O'Donnell added 13 points for the Shorewomen. Senior guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) had nine points and a game-best five steals. Freshman center Melissa Joseph (Selden, NY/Newfield) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Today's tilt marked the final game for Turner, the team's lone senior. |
