February 6, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD Senior guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) recorded her first career double-double, finishing with a team-high 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as host Washington College topped visiting Haverford College, 64-53, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen improved to 11-11 overall and 5-10 in conference play with the win, matching their best win total since the 2000-01 season. Haverford (4-16, 3-12) held a 23-17 lead with 8:30 remaining in the second half before the Shorewomen went on a 20-5 run which went into the second half. Washington led 30-28 at the break and built a 37-28 lead on a lay-up by junior forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) with 18:34 remaining in the game. Haverford responded by scoring 12 straight points, taking a 40-37 advantage on a jumper by Sara Cram with 10:56 on the clock. Washington then mounted a 15-1 run, capped off by a lay-up from sophomore guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) with 4:53 remaining, to put the Shorewomen up, 52-41, with 4:53 remaining. The Shorewomen led by at least five points the rest of the way. Turner was one of three Shorewomen to finish in double figures in scoring. Junior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) tossed in 10 points, grabbed seven boards, blocked three shots, and dished out a game-high six assists. Freshman guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) also scored 10 points. Lucas finished with nine points and brought down a career-best 14 boards. Rogers added nine points of her own for Washington. Brittany Lattisaw scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Haverford, while Abby Scattergood added 12 points, eight rebounds, and a game-best four steals. Cram and Kathleen Abels finished with eight points each for the Fords. Washington shot 35% from the field in the game and held Haverford to 28% shooting, including 18% shooting in the second half. The Shorewomen also enjoyed a 58-43 advantage on the boards. The Shorewomen last posted 11 wins in 2001-02, when they finished 11-14. This is the latest into a season the Shorewomen have had a .500 record since ending the 2000-01 campaign with a 12-12 mark. The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin & Marshall. |
