December 5, 2006 HAVERFORD, PA Host Haverford College survived a second-half comeback by visiting Washington College to come away with a 63-59 overtime victory in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight in Haverford, PA. The Fords (2-4, 1-2 Centennial) got a game-high 25 points from Abby Scattergood in the win, while junior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) pulled down a career- and game-high 22 rebounds in the loss for the Shorewomen (2-4, 0-3). Haverford jumped out to a 29-18 lead at halftime and extended the lead to 32-18 on a lay-up and free throw by Scattergood 20 seconds into the second half. Washington then reeled off a 14-2 run to close the gap to 34-32 on a jumper by sophomore guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/Pius X) with 11:30 to play in regulation. The Fords responded with a 6-1 spurt to push the lead to 40-33 on a Scattergood lay-up with 9:56 left in the period, but Washington answered with a 9-2 run of its own as a put-back by Conway tied the score at 42-42 with 6:36 on the clock. The two teams then traded baskets before a lay-up and free throw by Scattergood gave Haverford a 47-44 lead with 3:23 remaining in the second half. That score remained until WC freshman forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) converted one of two free throws to trim the deficit to 47-45 with 1:34 left in regulation. A scoreless possession for each team followed as Washington inbounded the ball following a timeout with 17 seconds on the clock. Freshman guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) knocked down a jumper from just inside the three-point line with five seconds to go in the period to send the game into overtime deadlocked at 47-47. Haverford scored the first nine points of the overtime period to take a 56-47 lead on a Scattergood lay-up with 2:37 to go. The Shorewomen rallied to cut the lead back to two points on a Slizofski three-pointer with 43 seconds left to make it 57-55, but that was as close as the Shorewomen would get as the Fords connected on six-of-eight free throws in the remaining seconds to seal the victory. Scattergood was 8-of-18 from the field and 8-of-9 at the free throw line en route to her 25 points. Scattergood also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Brittany Lattisaw added 17 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks for Haverford. Kate Wettstein matched Lattisaw's total of five blocks and matched Scattergood's total of 10 rebounds. Conway's 22 rebounds were just two shy of the Washington College single-game record of 24 set by Eboni Taylor in 1993. Sixteen of her her 22 boards came on the defensive end. Conway also finished with nine points, five assists, three blocks, and three steals. Slizofski put up career highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 10, respectively. Slizofski converted three of her five three-point field goals in the game. O'Donnell added 13 points, while freshman center Melissa Joseph (Selden, NY/Newfield) collected a career-high nine rebounds in just 12 minutes of action. Neither team shot well from the field as both teams finished at 29%. Similarly, the Fords were 2-of-8 from three-point land, while the Shorewomen were 4-of-21. The Shorewomen did hold a 68-57 advantage on the glass, but the difference came at the free throw line, where Haverford was 17-of-23, while Washington was just 7-of-15. The Shorewomen are back in action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Johns Hopkins. |
