2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD Senior guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) netted the game-winning jumper from 15 feet on an inbounds pass from freshman guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 2.1 seconds left as Washington College downed visiting Gettysburg College, 64-63, on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference women's basketball action to snap a 10-game losing streak against the Bullets. This is the first victory for the Shorewomen over Gettysburg since a 57-54 triumph on January 30, 1999. Washington College is now 6-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Shorewomen have now eclipsed the win total of a season ago. The Shorewomen took a 59-49 lead with 5:22 left on a three-point basket by sophomore guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spaulding), before Gettysburg went on a 14-3 run to take a 63-62 lead with 22.5 seconds to go. The Bullets took their first lead since the 2:59 mark of the first half on a driving layup by freshman guard Allie Drechsler and drew the foul. She missed the ensuing free throw and the ball went off a Gettysburg player. On the game-winning possession, O'Donnell missed a three-pointer, but the Shorewomen got the ball back on a Bullet turnover which set up the winning shot. Washington College outscored Gettysburg, 10-3, in the final 2:59 of the opening half to lead 36-29 at intermission. The Shorewomen took their biggest lead of the game with 10:09 to go at 56:45 on a trifecta from Rogers. O'Donnell led all Washington College scorers with 13 points in the win. Sophomore guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) registered her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also dished out four assists in the tilt. Junior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) had 10 points and six boards. Freshman guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) established career-highs with eight rebounds and six assists. The six assists were tops in the game for all players. Freshman forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) had six points and six rebounds, while Turner had nine points and five boards. Senior forward Kathryn Reilly led all players with 24 points and had a team-high eight rebounds for Gettysburg, who falls to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Freshman forward Courtney Fields added 12 points for the Bullets. Dreschler passed out a team-high five assists for Gettysburg. The Shorewomen shot 35% from the floor and committed 21 turnovers, while the Bullets shot 41% and turned the ball over 20 times. Washington College controlled the rebounding action by a margin of 45-37. The Shorewomen return to the court on Thursday with a 6:00 p.m. contest against visiting Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall. |
