Shorewomen Best Griffins in OT
Turner Scores Career-Best 23 Points in Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Senior guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored 21 of her career-high 23 points after halftime and converted what would prove to be a game-winning traditional three-point play with 12 seconds left in the game to lead host Washington College to a 71-67 overtime win over visiting Chestnut Hill in a non-conference women's basketball game tonight at Cain Athletic Center.

The Griffins (0-3) jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the game, but the Shorewomen (2-1) reeled off a 25-4 run to take control of a 29-19 advantage with 57 seconds left in the first half. Washington held a 29-21 lead at halftime.

Washington's lead grew to as many as 13 points with 16:00 left in the second half, but a 25-8 run by the Griffins gave Chestnut Hill a 50-46 lead with 9:59 left in regulation. Washington tied the score twice before briefly taking a 56-54 lead on a pair of free throws by junior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) with 4:03 on the clock. Carley Glass tied the score with a lay-up at 3:24 and Katelin Formica knocked down a jumped to put Chestnut Hill ahead, 58-56, with 2:39 left in the half.

Washington evened the score again, this time on a jumper by junior forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) with 2:20 remaining, but Andrea Carter put the Griffins back in front, 60-58, with a jumper of her own at 1:07. The Griffins had a chance to ice the game with 19 seconds left, but Maryanne Glass missed a pair of free throws. After a Washington timeout, Conway drove the lane and converted a lay-up with 14 seconds left in the half to tie the score at 60-60. Conway then stole the ball with four seconds left and saw a long desperation three-pointer rim out at the buzzer.

Chestnut Hill led for more than half of the overtime period before a jumper by Washington sophomore guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) gave the Shorewomen a 65-64 lead with 1:21 remaining. Lucas missed two free throws for Washington with 58 seconds left, but grabbed her own rebound on the second miss, was fouled, and made both of those free tosses to push the lead to 67-64 with 55 seconds to go.

Judy Parise tied the score at 67-67 by draining a three-pointer for the Griffins with 20 seconds on the clock. On Washington's ensuing possession found a cutting Turner in the lane for a made lay-up and foul with 12 seconds remaining. Turner knocked down the free throw to give Washington a 70-67 lead. A Chestnut Hill turnover in the backcourt then led to Conway knocking down the second of two free throws with six seconds left to clinch the 71-67 win for the Shorewomen.

Turner's 23 points came on 10-for-26 shooting from the floor and 3-of-3 shooting at the line. She also swiped four steals in the game. Lucas added finished with 10 points and tied her career high by hauling down 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive. Conway ended the game with eight points, a game-high seven assists, a game-high five steals, and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) scored 14 points off the bench, while freshman center Melissa Joseph (Selden, NY/Newfield) also came off the bench to total eight points on 4-of-4 shooting and seven rebounds.

Carter led Chestnut Hill with game-highs of 23 points and 17 rebounds. Tara Walsh added eight points, seven boards, and a game-high three blocks for the Griffins.

The Shorewomen return to action November 29th with their Centennial Conference opener, a 6:00 p.m. home game against Ursinus.
