30, 2005 COLLEGEVILLE, PA The Washington College women's basketball team lost its Centennial Conference opener to host Ursinus College, 61-40, this evening in Collegeville, PA. Mary Kate Daley turned in a double-double performance for the Bears (2-2, 1-1 Centennial) in the win, while sophomore guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) recorded a team-high 10 points and four assists in the losing effort for the Shorewomen (0-4, 0-1). The Shorewomen kept pace with the Bears throughout most of the first half, however, an 11-2 run to close out the period gave Ursinus the 33-24 advantage at the break. The Bears pulled away in the second half, shooting 53% in the period. Daley finished with 12 points and a game-best 15 board for the Bears. Sarah Hennessey added 16 points for Ursinus to lead all scorers, while Molly Guntli tallied 14 points and five boards. Kate McMahon dished out a game-high five assists off the bench. Washington sophomore guard Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) contributed seven points and four rebounds in the loss, while freshman guard Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Hts., NJ/St. Mary's) notched a career-high six points on two three-point baskets. Sophomore forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) also added six points and a team-high six rebounds. Conway was the only Shorewoman to reach double figures in scoring. The Shorewomen shot 25% from the floor and committed 17 turnovers, while the Bears shot 47% and turned the ball over 19 times. Washington was out-rebounded by a margin of 47-35. WC played most of the game without junior guard Regina Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Mamaroneck) who went down an injury in the opening minutes of the contest. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Centennial Conference opponent Dickinson. |
