Griffins Pull Away from WC, 77-60
Slizofski Scores Career-High 13 Points

GETTYSBURG, PA – The Gwynedd-Mercy College women's basketball team topped Washington College, 77-60, this evening in the first game of the Days Inn Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. Lauren Healy turned in a game-high 20 points for the Griffins (7-2) in the win, while freshman forward Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) scored a career-high 13 points in the losing effort for the Shorewomen (2-8).

The Griffins opened the game on an 11-2 run in the first 4:15 of play. Washington was able to contain Gwynedd-Mercy throughout the rest of the half and trailed, 39-29, at the break.

Gwynedd-Mercy started the second half with a 10-2 run in the first 3:10 of play in the period, giving the Griffins a 49-31 advantage, but Washington would go on a 11-2 run of its own, cutting the lead to 49-42 with 11:47 remaining. The Shorewomen went on to cut the Griffin lead down to as little as three at 56-53 with 8:10 left in the game, but the Griffins closed the game with a 21-7 run en route to the victory.

Healy was joined by three other Griffins in double figures in the scoring column. Jillian Chiarantona recorded 15 points and a team-high six rebounds for Gwynedd-Mercy, while Jackie Dougherty added 13 points and a game-high six steals for Gwynedd-Mercy and Beccie Strohecker finished with 10 points.

Slizofski grabbed six rebounds to go along with her 13 points for the Shorewomen. Junior guard Regina Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Mamaroneck) contributed 12 points on four three-pointers in the loss, while sophomore guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) recorded a career-high eight assists to go along with six points, eight rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Roth (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) recorded eight points and eight rebounds, while junior guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) added 12 points in the loss.

The Shorewomen shot 42% from the floor and committed 26 turnovers, while the Griffins shot 45% and turned the ball over only 15 times. Washington out-rebounded Gwynedd-Mercy by a margin of 42-30.

The Shorewomen complete play at the Days Inn Classic tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.
