3, 2005 CARLISLE, PA Host Dickinson College used an eight-point spurt midway through the second half en route to a 49-43 win over visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Red Devils improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 0-5 and 0-2 with the loss. The first
half was a defensive struggle. Dickinson took a 21-19 lead with 7:09 left in the
period on a lay-up by Jessica Howard; the Shorewomen outscored the Red
Devils, 4-2, the rest of the period, deadlocking the game at 23-23 at the break.
Neither team scored in the last three minutes of the first half. The
opening minutes of the second half were back-and-forth. The Shorewomen took their
last lead of the game on a lay-up by sophomore forward Brenda Lucas (New London,
PA/Avon Grove) with 11:57 left in the second half. Dickinson then scored the
next eight points to go up, 41-34, on a lay-up by Julie Younes with 8:12
on the clock. Washington cut the lead back to three, at 46-43, on a lay-up by
sophomore guard Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) with 1:53
left, but a Patrice Johnson three-pointer with 1:22 to go gave the Red
Devils control of the game with a 49-43 lead which became the final margin. Ally
Teatom tallied a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in
the win for the Red Devils, while Laura Houseal added 10 points, six rebounds,
and four steals. Pastroino and freshman guard Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) each scored 10 points to lead the Shorewomen. Luterzo's 10 points were a career high. Dickinson
shot 42% from the field in the game, while Washington shot 34%. The Red Devils
held a 31-29 advantage on the boards. The
Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game
against Haverford. That contest will be Washington's first home game of the season. |
