February 3, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD Visiting Muhlenberg College went on a 19-5 run over a span of 7:41 during the second half to take control of a close game en route to a 60-54 victory over host Washington College in a Centennial Conference women's basketball victory this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The Mules improved to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-16 and 2-11. The Mules jumped out to a 22-7 lead with 11:26 remaining in the first half, but Washington responded with a 22-7 run to tie the score at 29-29 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) with 1:10 to go in the period. Muhlenberg's Lacie Smith hit one of two free throws with 54 seconds on the clock to give the Mules a 30-29 advantage at the break. Washington evened the score at 33-33 with 16:35 left in the second half, but the Mules regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Stephanie Coluccini with 15:55 on the clock. The Shorewomen then ran off six straight points to take their biggest lead of the game at 39-35 on a jumper by sophomore guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) with 14:37 on the clock. Muhlenberg then went on the pivotal 19-5 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Kristen Piscadlo with 6:56 left in the game that put the Mules ahead, 54-44. Muhlenberg led by at least five points the rest of the way. Washington sophomore guard Regina Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Mamaroneck) hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer to provide the final margin. Coluccini led the Mules with game-high totals of 17 points and 11 rebounds. She was five-for-seven from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. Piscadlo added 16 points, seven rebounds, a team-high four assists, and a game-best four steals. Piscadlo connected on five-of-eight three-point field goal attempts. Smith turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Pastorino led Washington with 14 points and canned four three-pointers in the first half. Barrett finished with 12 points, while Turner tallied 10 points and a team-high three steals. Senior guard/forward Jenny Campitelli (Reisterstown, MD/Notre Dame Prep) matched her career high of nine points, pulled down a career- and team-high nine rebounds, and dished out three assists. Senior guard Jeremy Cook (Pattenburg, NJ/North Hunterdon) recorded a game-high five assists. Muhlenberg shot 39% from the field to Washington's 35% and held a 41-35 rebounding advantage, but shot just 15-of-29 from the free-throw line to the Shorewomen's 7-of-10. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford. |
