January 20, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD Sophomore guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored the Shorewomen's final six points of the game and freshman guard Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) posted career highs in points and rebounds as host Washington College outlasted visiting Haverford, 66-61, in double overtime in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The game featured 10 lead changes and eight ties. The Shorewomen (3-12, 2-7 Centennial) grabbed the biggest lead of the game at 42-34 on a Pastorino three-pointer with 9:08 remaining in regulation, but the Fords (3-11, 1-7) battled back and sent the game into overtime when Bea Chang drained three free throws with 28 seconds left in the half. Washington never led in the first overtime, but sent the game into a second extra period when sophomore forward Lauren Duckworth (Newtown, PA/Archbishop Wood) converted a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left in the period. Neither team scored in the second overtime until Duckworth knocked down a jumper with 2:12 remaining to give the Shorewomen a 60-58 lead. Meredith Foote then made one-of-two free throws for Haverford with 1:11 left to trim the lead to 62-61. Following a Washington turnover, the Fords had the ball with under a minute to play and the chance to take the lead, but sophomore forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) knocked away a Haverford entry pass to give the ball back to the Shorewomen with 31 seconds left. Turner then hit a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to go to push the lead to 64-61. Foote missed a three-pointer at the other end with 16 seconds left and Washington freshman forward Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) grabbed the rebound. Turner made two more free throws with four seconds on the clock to seal the win and provide the final margin. Pastorino led all scorers with her career-high 21 points and shared game-high rebounding honors with Proctor by pulling down 12 boards. Both Pastorino's and Proctor's 12 rebounds were also career highs. Duckworth tallied a double-double of her own, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Turner finished the game with 12 points. Lucas added nine points and a career-best 11 rebounds in the win. Foote led the Fords with 13 points, while Chang tallied 12 and Claire Scribner scored 11. Scribner and Kendra Smythe each grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Erica Juliano provided the Fords with 10 points. Kate Wettstein blocked a game-high five shots for Haverford. Neither team shot well from the field, but both did damage from the free throw line. Haverford shot 24% from the field, but connected on 27-of-37 free throw attempts, while the Shorewomen shot 29% from the field, but connected on 19-of-23 free throw attempts. Washington committed seven more turnovers than Haverford (29 to 22), but outrebounded the Fords, 65-46.
