February 12, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD Visiting Gettysburg College hung on for a 70-65 victory over host Washington College in Centennial Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Bullets (12-10, 9-6 CC) got 24 points each from Jen Bengel and Elizabeth Ross, while sophomore guard Regina Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Mamaroneck) supplied the Shorewomen (5-17, 3-12) with 20 points. Gettysburg took a 35-24 lead on a lay-up by Elizabeth Ross with 3:20 left in the first half, put the Shorewomen finished the period on a 9-0 run, capped off by a Barrett three-pointer with 19 seconds left in the period, to cut the lead to 36-34 at the break. Washington scored the first three points of the second half, pulling ahead for the first time on a jumper by senior guard Jeremy Cook (Pattenburg, NJ/North Hunterdon) with 18:32 left in the game that made the score 37-36 in favor of the Shorewomen. Ross converted a lay-up with 17:25 remaining to put Gettysburg back in front, 38-37. The Shorewomen regained the lead with 6:30 remaining as sophomore forward Lauren Duckworth (Newtown, PA/Archbishop Wood) knocked down a jumper to make it 53-52 in favor of the Shorewomen. Gettysburg's Emily Falk made one of two free throws with 5:36 to go to knot the score at 53-53 and another lay-up by Ross with 5:11 remaining gave the Bullets the lead for good and 55-53. Gettysburg built a five-point lead on a lay-up by Jamie Marshall with 2:52 remaining, but the Shorewomen found themselves back within two points, at 64-62, following a Duckworth lay-up with 48 seconds on the clock. The Bullets went six-of-six at the free throw line in the final minute, however, to seal the win. Ross scored her 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field. She also led all players in rebounds with 15 and assists with six. Bengel pulled down nine rebounds and swiped four steals for Gettysburg. Katie Eiden added 11 points for the Bullets. Barrett shot five-for-seven from beyond the three-point arc and 7-for-10 from the field en route to her 20 points. Duckworth, who was 8-for-13 from the field, finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) scored 10 points. Sophomore guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) led Washington in rebounds with seven. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore. |
