3, 2004 COLLEGEVILLE, PA Host Ursinus College held off a rally by visiting Washington College to hold on for a 68-65 Centennial Conference win this evening in Collegeville, PA. Washington senior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) broke the school record for career assists in the loss. Ursinus, which led for all but the first 2:17 of the game held a 66-61 lead with 44 seconds to play in the game following a jumper by Mary Kate Daley. Washington cut the lead to two points when senior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) canned a three-pointer with 28 seconds to play. Stephanie Cavalier then made one-of-two free throws for the Bears to push the lead back to three at 67-64 with 22 seconds left. Washington senior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) was fouled on a three-point attempt with 15 seconds remaining. Simos converted one of her three attempts, making the score 67-65 in favor of Ursinus. The Shorewomen fouled immediately after the Bears inbounded the ball and Dana Alf made one-of-two free throws to make it 68-65 with 14 seconds left. The Shorewomen had a chance to tie, but Piringer missed a three-pointer with two seconds to go and Ursinus held on for the win. The Shorewomen (4-14, 2-11 Centennial) held a brief 3-0 lead to open the game as Simos drained a three-pointer with 19:19 remaining in the half. Patronas recorded her 362nd career assist on the play to tie Washington's school record. The Bears (6-11, 4-8) answered with a 10-0 run, however, capped off by a lay-up by Dana Alf with 15:03 on the clock. Ursinus led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 35-27 lead into the intermission. Patronas dished out the 363rd assist of her career on a Simos three-pointer with 13:50 to go in the first half, passing Maggy Kilroy, who played at Washington from 1996-2000, for first place on the school's all-time list. Julia Tramontana led a balanced scoring effort for the Bears with 14 points and seven rebounds. Alison Walker tallied 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while Alf and Daly each finished with 11 points. Molly Guntli posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Simos captured game-high scoring honors with 15 points for the Shorewomen. Patronas finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in the contest, while Piringer added 12 points. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game at Philadelphia Biblical. |
