10, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD Senior forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) matched her career high of 29 points to lead the host Washington College Shorewomen to a 69-55 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Haverford College this evening at Cain Athletic Center. Haverford's Katie Crowley set Centennial Conference records for free throws attempted and free throws made in a single game. The Fords (2-17, 1-12 Centennial) led for much of the first half, but the Shorewomen (6-14, 3-11) ended the period on an 8-0 run to take a 33-29 lead into the intermission. After Haverford cut the lead to one, at 39-38, on a three-pointer by Caitie Kimura with 14:46 remaining in the second half, the Shorewomen reeled off a 10-0 run to take control of the game. The crucial spurt was capped off by a Smith lay-up with 11:31 to go that made it 49-38. Washington led by at least nine points the rest of the way. Smith's 29 points came on 11-of-18 shooting from the field and 7-of-11 shooting at the free throw line. She also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked two shots. Washington freshman guard LaToya Turner (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) also matched her career high, finishing with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Turner also grabbed six boards and swiped three steals. Senior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) dished out a game-high six assists, collected eight rebounds, scored five points, and recorded three steals for the Shorewomen. Crowley led all scorers with 31 points. She canned 21-of-24 free throw attempts, surpassing both of the previous conference records by two. Crowley also grabbed a team-best six rebounds. Claire Scribner added eight points in the loss for the Fords. As a team, Haverford was 27-of-30 at the charity stripe in the contest, but shot just 27% from the floor. Washington was just 14-of-26 at the line, but shot 46% from the field, including 54% in the second half. The Shorewomen host Wesley College Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season. |
