22, 2003 RADNOR, PA Senior forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) tallied game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) scored her 1,000th career point as the Washington College women's basketball team defeated Chestnut Hill, 83-68, in the consolation game of the Cabrini College Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon in Radnor, PA. Piringer's historic point came on a free throw late in the first half. Her four points in today's contest give her 1,001 for her career as she joins Eboni Taylor (1,478 points), Allison Wentworth (1,136), Allyson Britton (1,126), and Katie Bierzonski (1,065) as the fifth 1,000-point scorer in Washington College women's basketball history. Smith shot 12-of-17 from the field on her way to her 27 points. WC senior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) shot eight-for-15 from the floor, including a sparkling six-for-eight performance beyond the three-point arc, to finish with 22 points. Senior forward Kathryn Zajac (Bellmore, NY/St. Mary's) dished out a game-high four assists and collected 10 rebounds, while junior guard Jeremy Cook (Pattenburg, NJ/Pattenburg) added nine points and six boards for the Shorewomen (1-1). Jen Banks led the Griffins (0-2) with 17 points, while Lindsey Tornetta added 10. Kate Quintus contributed nine points and a team-best eight rebounds for Chestnut Hill. The Shorewomen will play their first Centennial Conference game and their first home game of the season Tuesday as they take on Johns Hopkins at 6:00 p.m. |
