22, 2003 LAS VEGAS, NV The Washington College women's basketball team fell to Bridgewater College, 60-44, in the consolation game of their bracket at the Adidas D-3 Desert Shootout today on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas, NV. Bridgewater (4-2) opened up a 30-22 lead at halftime after holding the Shorewomen (2-5) scoreless for a span of 6:44 late in the first half. The Eagles opened the second half on a 9-2 spurt capped off by a pair of free throws by Katy Herr to stretch the lead to 39-24 with 16:16 remaining in the period. The Shorewomen managed to cut the lead down to seven on a jumper by senior forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) that made it 44-37 with 7:30 remaining, but could get no closer as the Eagles went on for the win. Lindsay Andrews led the Eagles with a game-high 13 points and five rebounds, while Herr totaled 10 points and game-highs of six assists and five steals. Mya Braxton added nine points and 10 rebounds. Smith paced the Shorewomen with 10 points and a game-best 13 rebounds.Senior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) scored six points, grabbed six boards, recorded four assists, and notched a game-high five steals, while senior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) added nine points and six rebounds. Bridgewater turned to ball over 31 times in the contest and was outrebounded by Washington, 52-44, but held the Shorewomen to 26.5% shooting from the field. Washington is off until Monday, January 5th, when the Shorewomen host Muhlenberg in a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game. |
