10, 2003 BRYN MAWR, PA The Washington College women's basketball team earned its first Centennial Conference win of the season this evening, topping host Bryn Mawr, 65-50. The Shorewomen (2-3 overall, 1-2 Centennial) got a combined 37 points from senior forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) and senior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) in the victory. The Owls (1-6, 0-3) took their only lead of the game late in the first half, using a 10-0 run to go up 24-23 on a free throw by Amy Johnson with 3:56 left in the period. Washington answered by scoring 11 of the final 13 points in the half to take a 34-26 lead at the intermission. The Shorewomen opened up a lead of 15 points early in the second half, but Bryn Mawr whittled that lead down to six with an 11-2 run capped off by a three-pointer from Vanessa Von Hagen that made it 48-42 with 9:08 remaining. The Shorewomen again responded to the Bryn Mawr surge, going on a 10-0 run of their own to pull ahead 58-42 on a Simos three-pointer with 6:54 left. Washington led by at least 12 points the rest of the way. Simos finished with a game-high 20 points, while Smith added 17. Freshman guard Regina Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Mamaroneck) added nine points for the victors and senior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) contributed eight points and game-high six steals. Sarah Sniezek led Bryn Mawr with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Johnson finished with 18 points and a game-best nine boards. Bryn Mawr held a 36-31 advantage in rebounds, but turned the ball over 28 times to the Shorewomen's 12. The Shorewomen return to action Sunday, December 21st, when they take on Central College in the first round of the Adidas D-3 Desert Shootout in Las Vegas, NV.
