14, 2002 STEVENSON, MD The Washington College Shorewomen secured their first win of the season in convincing fashion this afternoon, besting host Villa Julie College, 75-27, in non-conference action. The Shorewomen (1-5) had runs of 21-0 and 22-0 in the first half to jump out to a 45-4 lead with just under four minutes to go in the period and a 52-11 advantage at the break. WC shot 55% in the game and held the Mustangs (0-7) to 24% shooting. Washington also forced 28 Villa Julie turnovers, including 21 in the first half, and held a 45-25 rebounding advantage. The Shorewomen held the Mustangs without a field goal for a 15-minute stretch in the opening period. Junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored a career-high 15 points on seven-for-eight shooting for the Shorewomen. Junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) added 15 points of her own on six-for-eight shooting from the field and three-for-four shooting beyond the three-point arc. Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) finished with 11 points, while sophomore forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) contributed 10 points and eight boards. WC junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) dished out seven assists with only one turnover to go along with seven points and six steals. Junior forward Kathryn Zajac (Bellmore, NY/St. Mary's) added seven points and five steals, while sophomore guard Jenny Campitelli (Reisterstown, MD/Notre Dame Prep) tallied career highs of six points and six rebounds. Lorrie Budd led Villa Julie with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Shorewomen will resume play December 29th in the first of two games at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, FL. WC will play Hanover at 1:00 p.m. The following day, the Shorewomen will face William Patterson at 4:00 p.m. |
