18, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD The Washington College Shorewomen went on a 23-2 run over a stretch of 8:44 spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second en route to their first Centennial Conference win of the season, a 71-60 victory over visiting Ursinus this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen (4-9 overall, 1-3 Centennial) got a game-high 24 points from junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) and 17 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high seven assists from junior point guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) in the win. The Shorewomen trailed, 25-16, with 3:46 to play in the first half before outscoring the Bears (4-10, 2-3), 12-2, the rest of the period to knot the score at 27-27 at the break. WC continued the surge in the second half, scoring the period's first 11 points to go up, 39-27, on a Piringer jumper with 15:45 to play. The Shorewomen led by at least six points and by as many as 19 the rest of the way. Washington shot just 24% from the field and was one-of-17 from three-point range in the first half, but turned things around in the second, shooting 54% from the field and canning six-of-13 three-point tries in the period. The Shorewomen converted 18-of-20 free-throw attempts in the game and had a 50-32 advantage on the boards. Piringer and Patronas were joined by junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) in double figures. Simos finished with 12 points in the game, all of which came in the second half. WC junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) matched her career-high with a game-best 13 rebounds, scored eight points, and blocked a game-high four shots. Bridget Hussey led Ursinus with 20 points and converted five-of-nine three-point attempts. Megan Peck was the only other Bear in double figures, finishing with 10 points. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday, when they host Centennial Conference East Division rival Muhlenberg at 6:00 p.m. |
