5, 2003 SWARTHMORE, PA The Washington College Shorewomen slipped to 6-13 overall and 2-7 in Centennial Conference play with a 77-67 loss at Swarthmore this evening. Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) led Washington with a game-high 23 points, posting her third consecutive outing with at least 20 points. The Shorewomen led the Garnet Tide (14-5, 7-2) at the half, 37-33, on the strength of 50% shooting from the field in the period. Swarthmore shot just 28% in the opening half. Roles were reversed in the second half, however, as Swarthmore shot 44% while holding the Shorewomen to 28% shooting. The Garnet took the lead for good in the opening moments of the second half as a bucket by Radiance Waters at 19:21 and a three-pointer from Alison Furman with 18:47 to go put them in front, 38-37, and started off a 9-2 spurt for Swarthmore. Simos's 23-point night followed a school-record 34-point performance against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday and a 21-point outing against Notre Dame (MD) on Thursday. Junior guards Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) and Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Patronas also grabbed seven boards and dished out five assists. Junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. Hartzell, who is the Shorewomen's all-time leader in blocked shots, tallied her 100th career block in the contest. Katie Robinson led Swarthmore with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Zoey Adams-Deutsch added 18 points and eight boards, while Alison Wolf scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Furman finished with 12 points. The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Dickinson. |
