WC Loses Home Opener to Garnet
Smith Pumps in 24 Points

CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Washington College Shorewomen dropped their home opener, 80-63, to visiting Swarthmore this evening in Centennial Conference action at Cain Athletic Center. Sophomore forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) poured in 24 points for the Shorewomen (0-5, 0-2 Centennial) in the loss.

Swarthmore (6-2, 3-0) took a 44-27 lead into halftime and maintained control of the game in the second half. The Garnet Tide shot 51% from the floor in the game and 81% from the free-throw line. Washington shot 34% from the floor and 14% from beyond the three-point arc, but did shoot 76% from the line. The Garnet held a 40-33 advantage in rebounds.

Smith scored her 24 points on seven-for-15 shooting from the field and 10-of-14 shooting at the charity stripe. She also collected a team-high nine board and blocked two shots. Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) added 12 points. Junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) finished with six points, four steals, and two blocks.

Zoey Adams-Deutsch led the Garnet with a game-high 26 points and seven boards. Katie Robinson had a fine all-around game, tallying 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Villa Julie.
