22, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD The Washington College Shorewomen ended their 2002-03 season this afternoon with an 84-80 upset of visiting McDaniel. Junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) scored 20 points in the win for Washington (10-15, 6-9 Centennial Conference) and finishes the season with a 17.9 scoring average, the highest in team history. McDaniel (17-7, 8-6) held a 34-32 lead at the half and a 61-56 with lead with 9:05 to go in the second. The Shorewomen then went on a 16-6 run over the next 5:06 to go up 72-67 with 3:59 to play on a lay-up by junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton). After Brooke Weimer made two free throws for McDaniel at 3:03, Piringer buried a three-pointer with 2:56 to go to give Washington a 75-69 lead. The Shorewomen led by at least four the rest of the way. Piringer's 20 points included four three-pointers. Her season average of 17.9 surpassed the previous school record of 17.5 set in 1994-95 by Eboni Taylor. Simos added 19 points in the win, while junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) scored 17 points, was five-of-eight from long range, and dished out six assists. Junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while junior forward Kathryn Zajac (Bellmore, NY/St. Mary's) added 10 points and six boards. McDaniel was led by Jen Piccolomini, who totaled 21 points and eight boards. Kelly Cramp added 20 points, while Erin White contributed 15. Toby McIntire dished out a game-high nine assists. The Shorewomen, who shot 10-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc, finished the season with four games in four days due to postponements. WC went 3-1 in those games. |
