9, 2003 FREDERICK, MD Junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) led the way with 22 points for Washington College as the Shorewomen earned their second win of the season, downing host Hood College, 75-56, this evening in non-conference play. Washington improves to 2-7 with the victory, while the Blazers slip to 3-4. Hood took an early 15-9 lead, but a 12-4 spurt by the Shorewomen, capped off by a lay-up from sophomore forward Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) gave WC the lead for good at 21-19 with 8:33 to play in the first half. The Shorewomen ended the period on a 13-0 run and took a 41-26 lead into the half after Piringer nailed two three-pointers in the final 13 seconds of the period. WC maintained a lead of at least 15 points throughout the second half. Piringer finished with four three-pointers in the game on the way to her game-high 22 points. Smith turned in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. WC junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) tallied 13 points and five assists, while junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) and junior forward Kathryn Zajac (Bellmore, NY/St. Mary's) each grabbed 11 boards. Danielle Allen led the way for Hood with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Mandy Fischer was the only other Blazer in double figures, finishing with 13 points. The Shorewomen shot 41% in the game and held the Blazers to 28% shooting. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Goucher College. |
