19, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) scored 31 points and junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) broke the school record for assists in a season and nearly recorded a triple-double as the host Washington College Shorewomen topped visiting Haverford, 75-54, in Centennial Conference action this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen (8-14, 4-8 Centennial) broke open up a close game with a 12-3 run over the last 3:47 of the first half. Junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds left in the half to give WC a 40-29 halftime lead over the Fords (7-16, 4-10). The Shorewomen kept the double-digit lead throughout the second half, outscoring Haverford, 35-25, in the period. Simos's 31 points were three off the school record she set earlier this season. She was 10-of-24 from the floor, four-of-nine from beyond the three-point arc, and seven-of-seven at the free throw line. Patronas tallied nine points, nine assists, and 10 rebounds in the game. Her fourth assist of the contest broke the WC single season record of 122 assists set in 1998-99 by Maggy Kilroy. Patronas now has 128 assists on the year. Piringer added 19 points in the win, while junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored 10 points, grabbed eight boards, blocked four shots, and swiped three steals. Haverford was led by Katie Crowley, who finished with 16 points. Claire Scribner and Meredith Foote each added 11 points. Scribner also had four blocks. Washington turned the ball over nine times in the contest to Haverford's 20. The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 7:00 p.m. conference game at Bryn Mawr. |
