Hartzell Breaks Two Records in Loss
Shorewomen Fall to Fords, 74-64

HAVERFORD, PA – Washington College junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) broke school records for blocked shots in both a season and a single game, but the Shorewomen fell to host Haverford College, 74-64, in Centennial Conference action this afternoon. The loss drops the Shorewomen to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Fords improve to 5-10 and 2-5 with the win.

The Shorewomen took an early 21-15 lead, but a 13-0 run by the Fords over a 4:27 stretch of the first half gave Haverford a 28-21 lead with 6:06 to play in the first half. The Fords took a 37-32 lead into the intermission. The Shorewomen managed to cut the lead down to four twice in the second half, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.

Hartzell blocked seven shots in the contest for Washington College, breaking the single-game mark of six she set two weeks ago today at Goucher. Her third block of the day was her 34th of the season, breaking the previous record of 33 established by Megan Miller in the 1994-95 season. Hartzell, who now has 38 blocked shots on the season, also tallied 14 points and four steals today for the Shorewomen.

Washington had three other players finish in double figures in scoring - junior guards Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge), Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman), and Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton). Piringer tallied a team-high 16 points and a game-high five assists. Patronas added 15 points and four assists, while Simos added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Haverford's Caitie Kimura and Katie Crowley tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 points a piece. The Fords were 28-of-40 at the free-throw line as the Shorewomen were whistled for 26 fouls. WC was eight-of-13 at the stripe and the Fords were whistled for 12 fouls.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Bryn Mawr.
