Shorewomen Fall to Hanover
at Land of Magic Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Washington College Shorewomen lost the first of their two games at the AmeriSport Land of Magic Classic this afternoon, falling to Hanover College 78-64 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s ICI Center in Daytona Beach.

Hanover (5-3) jumped out to a 17-6 lead early in the first half, but the Shorewomen (1-6) rallied to cut the lead to three on three occasions later in the period. A three-pointer by junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) with 15 seconds on the clock narrowed the Panther advantage to 36-33 at the half. WC converted seven-of-12 three-pointers in the first half, with Piringer accounting for three of them.

The Panthers scored 15 of the first 22 points in the second half to take a 51-40 lead with 15:25 to play and used an 8-0 spurt later in the period to go up 70-52 with 5:11 on the clock. Hanover’s Laura Little scored 14 points in the second half.

Piringer finished with 18 points in the contest to lead the Shorewomen and was four-for-nine beyond the three-point line. Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals and made four of her six three-point attempts. Junior point guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) contributed 13 points, eight boards, and six assists and was three-for-five beyond the arc. Junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) blocked four shots to go along with her nine points and six rebounds.

Little led all scorers with 19 points for the Panthers. She also tallied nine rebounds and five assists. Tessa Wynn added 17 points, 12 boards, and six steals.

Hanover shot 34% from the field in the game, to Washington’s 37%. The Panthers held a 51-38 advantage on the glass and forced 27 WC turnovers. The Shorewomen shot 52% (11-of-21) from beyond the three-point line in the game.

The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow at the AmeriSport Land of Magic Classic, taking on William Paterson at 4:00 p.m. at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.
