Shorewomen Fall to Gophers, 66-60
Hartzell's Six Blocks Break WC Record

TOWSON, MD – Washington College junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) blocked a school-record six shots, but the Shorewomen dropped a 66-60 decision to host Goucher College this evening in Towson, MD. The loss dropped the Shorewomen to 2-8, while to Gophers improved to 4-6.

Goucher led 19-16 with 7:28 to play in the first half before the Shorewomen went on a 17-4 run that gave them a 33-23 lead with 1:37 left in the period. The Gophers responded by scoring nine of the final 13 points in the half to cut the lead to 37-32 at the intermission.

The Gophers continued their charge in the opening minutes of the second half, opening the period on a 12-5 spurt to take a 44-42 lead with 15:35 remaining. The Shorewomen answered with a 7-0 spurt that put WC 49-44 with 13:12 to play, but Goucher scored eight of the next ten points to take the lead for good on a jumper by Stephanie Tolbert that gave the Gophers a 52-51 advantage with 5:41 remaining.

The Gophers would push the lead to 62-55 with 1:03 left. The Shorewomen rallied and cut the lead to 63-60 on a bucket by junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) with 27 seconds remaining, but the Goucher made three-of-four free throws in the final moments to hold on for the win.

Hartzell's six blocks bested the previous WC single-game record of five, which had been set on four occasions - most recently by Katie Bierzonski against Haverford three years ago. Hartzell finished with nine points and seven boards in the contest as well.

Patronas dished out a season-high eight assists and scored 13 points, while junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) led the Shorewomen with 14 points and canned four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Jeremy Cook (Pattenburg, NJ/North Hunterdon) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her eight points.

Tolbert led the Gophers with a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kate Guggino added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Erin Borsody chipped in with 11 points and seven boards.

The Shorewomen return to Centennial Conference play Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Johns Hopkins.
