7, 2002 GETTYSBURG, PA The Washington College Shorewomen lost their Centennial Conference opener, 73-61, this afternoon to host Gettysburg College. The Bullets improved to 4-1 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 0-4 overall with the loss. Junior guards Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) and Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) led the Shorewomen with 18 points a piece. Gettysburg led 34-26 at the half. The Shorewomen shot just six-for-33 in the first half, but stayed within striking distance by converting 12-of-15 free throws in the opening period. The Bullets maintained a lead of at least five points throughout the second half. Piringer canned four three-pointers en route to her 18 points. Patronas grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with her 18 points. Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) added 13 points. Jen Bengel and Emily Falk shared scoring honors for the Bullets with 16 points each. Elizabeth Ross added nine points, while Jay Hodge scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 20 boards. WC shot 28% from the floor in the game, but 81% from the free throw line. The Shorewomen are back in action with their home opener a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference contest against Swarthmore on Wednesday. |
