Simos Breaks Scoring Record in Loss
Junior Pours in 34 Points Against F&M

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Junior guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wooton) scored a school-record 34 points and sunk a school-record 16 free throws, but it was not enough as the host Washington College Shorewomen lost to Franklin & Marshall, 82-78, this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen slipped to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in Centennial Conference play, while F&M improved to 10-7 and 4-4.

F&M led 38-29 at the half and led by 19 points at 71-52 with 7:44 remaining in the game before the Shorewomen crept back into the contest. A Simos three-pointer with seven seconds left capped off a 26-10 run and cut the lead to 81-78. F&M's Dana Johns knocked down one-of-two free throws on the ensuing possession, however, to seal the win for the Diplomats.

Simos's 34 points surpassed the previous school record of 32 first set by Eboni Taylor in a 1995 game against F&M and matched by junior guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) last month against Muhlenberg. Simos was 16-of-17 at the free throw line, breaking Taylor's record of 12 free throws made, which she established in 1995 against Johns Hopkins.

Also reaching double figures in scoring for Washington were junior guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) with 16 points and junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), who tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Amy Abernathy led F&M with 23 points, 11 boards, and four blocks. Johns added 14 points and Francesca DiFazio totaled 10.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
