20, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) poured in a career-high 29 points off 13-for-20 shooting from the field to lead the Washington College Shorewomen to a 75-54 win over Delmarva-area rival Wesley College tonight at the Cain Athletic Center. Smith came just three points short of the school record for points in a game set by Eboni Taylor in 1995. Washington (2-1) broke open a close game with a 13-0 run in the first half that put the Shorewomen up 32-18 with 3:46 to play before the break. Sophomore guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton) and senior forward Janine Morehead (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) combined for nine of WC's points during the crucial spurt. The Shorewomen led 38-23 at the half and led by at least 11 points the rest of the way. Smith's big night came on the heels of back-to-back 18-point performances at the season-opening Sho'Time Shootout this past weekend. Smith put up those numbers despite running into foul trouble early in both games. Tonight, Smith pumped in 17 of her 29 points in the opening stanza. Washington's only other player to reach double figures in scoring was sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge), who finished with 10. Freshman center Marquita Green (Troy, NJ/Troy) led Wesley (1-2) with 15 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Robin Detweiler (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) added 13 points. The Shorewomen shot better than 48% from the field for the game, while holding the Wolverines to 35% shooting and forcing 31 Wesley turnovers. Washington returns to action Monday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Catholic.
