8, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's basketball team jumped out to a 54-27 halftime lead and cruised to a 93-64 win over visiting Villa Julie College this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen, who led by as many as 35 points in the second half, evened their record at 4-4 with the win, while the Mustangs slipped to 1-7. The Shorewomen controlled the game the whole way, never relinquishing the lead after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) started the scoring 12 seconds into the contest. Washington shot 56% from the field and 60% from three-point land in the first half and finished at 49% and 42% for the game, respectively. The Shorewomen also dominated the glass, outrebounding Villa Julie, 47-30, and collecting 23 offensive boards. All 12 Shorewomen players scored in the win, led by freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro), who netted 17 points and collected a game-high 12 rebounds. Patronas finished wth 14 points, while sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) added 12. Sophomore forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) also scored 12 points, while hauling down nine boards. Sophomore guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton) and senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) each scored nine points. All nine of Simos' points came on three-pointers, while Britton dished out five assists. Villa Julie sophomore forward Maura Fannin (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) poured in a game-high 26 points to lead four Mustangs in double figures. Junior guard Delena DeShields (Baltimore, MD/Western) scored 13 points and handed out a game-high seven assists, while senior center Alyssa Phoebus (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore center Lorrie Budd (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) scored 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Washington's 93 points were a season-high for the Shorewomen, who are off until January 4th when they open play in the first round of the Frostburg State Tournament against William Smith at 1:00 p.m.
