WC Nets First Conference Win
Shorewomen Drop Ursinus, 68-56

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- The Washington College Shorewomen earned their first Centennial Conference win of the season this evening, posting a 68-56 road win over Ursinus College. The Shorewomen (6-6 overall, 1-3 Centennial) were led by sophomore guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton), who scored 18 points and connected on four of her seven three-point field goal attempts.

The Bears (4-8, 3-3) led early in the game, but a pair of made free throws by Washington sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) gave the Shorewomen a 14-13 lead with 7:57 remaining in the first half. Washington led the rest of the way and took a 26-24 advantage into the lockerroom.

Ursinus stayed in the game throughout the second half and trailed by only six points with 1:20 to play after Katie Shearer converted a lay-up to set the score at 60-54. Washington freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) answered a lay-up with her own on the next possession to give WC a 62-54 lead with 55 seconds left. The Shorewomen converted six-of-eight free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Smith was the only Washington player other than Simos to finish in double figures, turning in a 13-point, 10-rebound performance. The Bears' Erin Maurer led all scorers with 23 points, while Shearer added 13 and Bridget Hussey added 14 for Ursinus. The Shorewoman bench outscored the Ursinus bench, 30-0.

Washington committed 23 turnovers in the game, but held a 45-37 advantage on the boards and limited Ursinus to 29% shooting from the field.

The Shorewomen return to action Monday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Bryn Mawr.
