Garnet's Second Half Does in WC

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen found themselves tied at the half with the defending Centennial Conference Champions, but Swarthmore pulled away in the second period for a 73-56 win tonight at Cain Athletic Center.

The Shorewomen (8-10, 3-6 Centennial Conference) used 16-5 run to turn a five point first-half deficit into a 30-24 lead with 4:20 to play in the opening half. The Garnet (15-4, 8-1) outscored WC 11-5 the rest of the period and the score was deadlocked, 35-35, at the break. Both teams shot well in the first 20 minutes as Washington connected on 52% of its shots and Swarthmore nailed 55% of its field-goal attempts in the half.

Garnet junior guard Alison Furman (Wynnewood, PA/Haverford) canned a three-pointer 15 seconds in the second half and Swarthmore took the lead for good. WC trailed by just four, 52-48, with 9:48 to play before the Garnet scored ten straight points to go up 62-48 with 7:37 on the clock. Swarthmore led by at least ten points the rest of the way.

Garnet senior forward Heather Kile (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) shot just four-of-10 from the field, but scored a game-high 22 points on the strength of 14-of-17 shooting from the free throw line. Kile also collected nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie Robinson (Medfield, MA/Medfield) added 19 points, seven steals, and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Alison Wolff (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) finished with 12 points.

Freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonesboro) led the Shorewomen with 21 points. Sophomore guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton) added 12 points and senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) added 11.

Swarthmore held a 39-27 advantage on the glass and pulled down 15 offensive rebounds.

The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Notre Dame (MD).
