5, 2001 SWARTHMORE, PA -- The Washington College women's basketball team shot a solid 45% from the field this evening, but could not keep pace with the blistering shooting of host Swarthmore College in an 87-64 Centennial Conference loss to the Garnet Tide this evening. The Garnet, which shot 56% from the field and an eye-popping 69% from beyond the three-point line, improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen drop to 2-4 and 0-2. Swarthmore connected on 32 of its 57 field goal attempts in the game and nailed nine of its 13 three-point attempts. To top it off, the Garnet players were a combined 14-for-16 from the free-throw line. Swarthmore built a big lead early, jumping ahead 17-2 just 5:39 into the contest, and led by at least ten points the rest of the way. The halftime score was 45-31. Three Garnet players scored 18 points each. Allison Furman poured in her 18 off of six-for-seven shooting from three-point land. Katie Robinson shot 7-for-12 from the floor en route to her 18, while Kristen Lee shot 8-for-11 from the field for hers. Heather Kile also reached double figures with 14 points. Freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) led WC with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) added 13 in a reserve role. Senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) finished with 11 points. Smith, the team's leading scorer this season, and Britton, the team's leading scorer from a year ago, each picked up four fouls and combined to log just 43 minutes of playing time. Sophomore guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) dished out a career-high nine assists in the loss. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Hood.
