WC Bounces Back Against Hornets
Marietta Wins Sho'Time Shootout

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) scored a game-high 21 points and freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) tossed in 18 on 7-for-11 shooting to lead the host Washington College Shorewomen to a 69-63 win over Shenandoah in the consolation game of the Sho'Time Shootout this afternoon. Washington evened its record to 1-1, while the Hornets fell to 0-2.

Shenandoah led for most of the first half, though never by more than six points, and took a 32-30 lead into the lockerroom. The Hornets failed to capitalize on 14 first-half Washington fouls, making just 10-of-22 free throws in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Shorewomen to a 46-45 leader on a Smith jumper with 9:45 to play and stayed ahead until the 2:45 mark when Hornet senior guard Rosaline Fisher (Green Castle, PA/James Buchanan) nailed a three-pointer to put Shenandoah up 61-60. Smith put WC up for good with seven consecutive points, however, giving the Shorewomen a 67-61 lead with 1:19 to play. The two teams exchanged free throws to provide for the final margin.

Fourteen of Smith's 18 points came in the second half as she played just 22 minutes while in foul trouble. Smith, who was named to the All-Tournament team, also added six rebounds for WC. Piringer canned five three-pointers en route to her 21-point, seven-rebound afternoon. Sophomore guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) filled up the WC box score with eight points, eight boards, and seven assists.

Fisher, Shenandoah's All-Tournament team selection, led the Hornets with 19 points. Senior guard Wendy Legge (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) added 11 points, while junior guard Adina Trammel (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) collected a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Shorewomen shot just 32 percent from the field, but held the Hornets to 28 percent shooting.

In the championship game of the tournament, Marietta knocked off Virginia Wesleyan, 52-40. The Pioneers (2-0) held the Blue Marlins (1-1) to 17 percent shooting in the first half and held a 24-14 lead at the break, despite going scoreless for the final 9:26 of the period. Marietta senior forward Amber Oliver (Point Pleasant, WV/Point Pleasant) led all scorers with 12 points and added a game-high seven rebounds. Oliver was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
