Turnovers Hurt WC in Loss
Mules Pull Away in Second Half

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Thirty-one turnovers, including 17 in the first half, spoiled an otherwise solid effort for the Washington College Shorewomen this afternoon in a 76-60 Centennial Conference home loss to No. 15 Muhlenberg College. The Shorewomen (10-12, 4-8 Centennial Conference) shot 50% in the first half and held the Mules (19-2, 11-2) to 28% shooting in the period, but trailed 32-30 at the break.

Muhlenberg held a 28-19 lead over the Shorewomen with 3:22 to play in the first half, but a three-pointer by sophomore guard Katie Piringer (Potomac, MD/Stone Ridge) near the end of the period capped off an 11-4 spurt that got Washington within two.

Another Piringer three-pointer opened the first half and gave WC its first and only lead at 33-32 with 19:47 to play. Muhlenberg sophomore center Susan Marchiano (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) hit a lay-up on the ensuing Mule possession to give her team the lead for good. The Mules slowly pulled away and may have iced the game when a Marchiano jumper and a three-pointer by senior forward Jenn Risley (Allentown, PA/Parkland) turned an eight-point lead into a 13-point advantage at 68-55 with 4:36 to play.

The Shorewomen cooled off in the second half as they shot 37% to finish at 43% for the game. Muhlenberg, meanwhile, warmed up and shot 46% in the period to finish at 36% in the contest.

Marchiano led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Risley finished with 17 points and converted three-of-four three-point field goal attempts. Sophomore forward Becky Richmond (Philadelphia, PA/Central) and senior guard Lindsay St. Lawrence (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) each added 12 points, while junior guard Randi Baran (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) dished out a game-high seven assists.

Piringer's 17 points paced WC and she hit three-of-five three-point field goal attempts. Sophomore guards Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) and Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton) each added 10 points.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. conference game at Haverford College.
